Description
Arthur Marsh took his picture's title from Thomas Gray's poem, 'Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard', published in 1751. The ploughman is worn out by constantly tramping the fields behind the plough horses. He trudges home, his senses dulled by work. The poet is left to contemplate the 'solemn stillness' of the evening countryside. Gray describes the fading of the 'glimmering landscape', which Marsh captures in his twilight scene;
