Description
The monks Saint Theophanes, called the confessor (ca. 759-818) and Saint Theodore the Studite (759-826) were whipped on the order of the Emperor Theophile (reign from 829 to 842), during the second iconoclastic crisis (813-843). Painted miniature, 12th century, made in Sicily (Italy) in "Synopsis historiarum" (synopsis of the history of the regne of the Byzantine emperors), from Ioannes (John) Skylitzes (ca. 1040-1101).
