Description
The work of 19th-century fishermen meant frequent risky journeys by sea. The men in this small boat seem to have a basket of crabs. Two men are rowing hard through the big waves, while another seems to be using an oar as a rudder. They have probably taken their sail down because the wind is blowing too briskly to use it. Behind them are two-masted and three-masted trading ships. Hundreds of journeys by trading ships were made every month along the North-East coast.
