Description
This view shows one of the many mills along the River Ouseburn. Crushed flint was used in the manufacture of pottery and glass, important industries in this area during the 19th century. Carmichael painted a number of landscapes, although he was best known for his shipping scenes. He may have been taught by the Newcastle landscape painter Thomas Miles Richardson, Senior.
