Description
In the Victorian period, butter was made in large square blocks, which was convenient both for storing on at markets and in stores. Company names and logos could be pressed into the hardening butter with a stamp, so that particular butters were distinctive. Only very high quality butters were made with fresh milk. More often butter was made with sour cream and was very pale as a result. Hence this advert for artificial colouring to give butter its expected yellow colour.
