Although this painting admirably captures what one imagines is the terrifying experience of a sea-battle (this was famously the last sea-battle of the age of sail) in reality it was fought with the moored Turkish and Egyptian ships and the Allied ships almost alongside each other - perhaps even more terrifying!. On his first voyage after joining the Royal Navy, my great-grandfather found himself on board the second ship-of-the-line to enter the harbour, HMS Albion.
