Description
The Scottish bandit and cattle rustler Johnny Armstrong is shown leaving his stronghold at Gilnockie Tower, on his way to see King James V of Scotland. However, the King was determined to stamp out banditry, and had Johnny Armstrong and his men hanged in 1530. The bright colouring and careful detail of the picture show the influence of Pre-Raphaelite art. Henry Emmerson's patron, the Newcastle industrialist Sir William Armstrong, was descended from Johnny Armstrong;
