Description
The Corinthian Maid, 1782-84 (oil on canvas), Wright of Derby, Joseph (1734-97). According to the Roman historian Pliny the Elder (23/24-79 AD) the first drawing was made by a young Corinthian woman who drew a line around her husband's shadow on the wall to keep a memory of him when he went to war.
Josiah Wedgwood commissioned this classic legend about the origin of the visual arts.
